There was a time when being really good at Excel meant knowing dozens of formulas by heart.

VLOOKUP. INDEX-MATCH. IF formulas. Pivot Tables. Conditional Formatting.

And if you could do all of that without asking anyone for help, you were probably the person everyone came to when an Excel sheet refused to behave.

That skill still matters.

But there’s still something you need to bring to the table:

You can give AI a spreadsheet and ask it to analyse the numbers.

That’s why data skills still matter even when AI becomes better.

So, Should You Learn Excel Manually or With AI?

Honestly, both.

Don’t skip the basics just because AI can write a formula for you.

At the same time, don’t ignore AI just because you’ve been using Excel for years.

Learn how Excel works first.

Then figure out where AI can save you time.

Understand how data is cleaned and analysed.

Then use AI to help you explore it faster.

Know how dashboards are built.

Then let AI help with some of the repetitive parts.

You don’t have to choose between Excel and AI.

Learn Excel. Learn AI. Then learn where each one makes your work easier.

The Excel Expert Is Changing

The old idea of an Excel expert was someone who knew every formula and could finish a spreadsheet faster than everyone else.

That still matters.

But today, being good at Excel is also about knowing what needs to be done, what can be automated and when AI can help.

Sometimes you’ll write the formula yourself.

Sometimes you’ll ask AI for a starting point.

Sometimes AI will give you something that’s completely wrong—and you’ll know it because you understand Excel.

That’s the real advantage.

You aren’t handing your work over to AI.

You’re using AI without losing control of the work.

And This Applies Beyond Excel

The same thinking is showing up across data and office work.

Reports that used to take hours are becoming faster to prepare.

Routine data tasks can be simplified.

Ideas for dashboards, formulas and analysis can be generated much quicker.

But the people who benefit most aren’t necessarily the ones who know the most AI tools.

They’re the ones who understand the work and know where AI fits into it.

That’s an important distinction.

Knowing how to open an AI tool is easy.

Knowing what to ask it, checking its answer and using the result properly is a much more useful skill.

What Should Professionals Focus On?

Instead of trying to learn every new AI tool that appears, build a strong combination of skills.

Start with your core skill.

For Excel users, that could mean becoming comfortable with formulas, Pivot Tables, data cleaning, dashboards and reporting.

Then add AI.

Learn how to write useful prompts.

Learn how to ask better questions.

Learn how to check AI-generated results.

And most importantly, learn when not to use AI.

Sometimes the quickest solution is still a simple Excel formula you already know.

That’s perfectly fine.

The goal isn’t to use AI everywhere.

The goal is to work smarter where it actually helps.

Manual Excel isn’t going anywhere.

But spending hours doing something manually just because “that’s how we’ve always done it” doesn’t make much sense either.

The real question isn’t Manual vs AI.

It’s:

How can you use your Excel skills and AI together to do better work, in less time?
